In this excellent and extremely honest real-world review, Michael Connell asks the question so many of us have been asking since mirrorless cameras began being touted as professional tools: is the Fujifilm X-T1 a viable sports camera?
To answer the question, he decided to take the camera and the 50-140mm f/2.8 lens to a professional hockey game. Although his initial plan was to use it just for the warm-ups, he ended up using it for the entire game, testing it in different environments and focusing on different types of action, such as the players moving laterally and towards him.
He had previously used the camera for hockey photography before firmware update 4.0 and wasn’t particularly impressed stating that it:
… simply wasn’t anywhere in the ballpark with the D750.
This time around, however, he had the new firmware and found the performance noticeably better, though admittedly still not as good as his Nikon.
For each period of the game, Michael describes in great detail how he used the camera and its performance in each specific situation. He also shares his favourite settings, which should prove useful for any photographer considering the X-T1 for sports.
