Craig Mode is a writer and photographer who splits his time between Tokyo and New York City. He recently published in-depth review of the Leica Q on his blog following six months of use. His point of view is mainly that of a travel photographer who spent the last six months in South Korea, Myanmar and Japan.
Craig gives an in-depth and enthusiastic review of the camera. He makes it very clear from the first sentence where he states:
The Leica Q is the best travel camera I’ve ever used.
The writer praises the autofocus as well as the manual focus aids, lens quality, electronic viewfinder and image quality including the high ISO capabilities. However he also lists some negative aspects he wishes could be improved. Despite having used the camera in all sorts of conditions including heat and 100% humidity, he laments the lack of proper weather sealing.
It is pretty clear by the end that Craig loves this camera. His review is quite a pleasant read because he shares some interesting stories from his six month journey which make the article much more personal and different than your standard review. He also explains that photography for him is mainly a way to document, so it isn’t a surprise that the article is full of beautiful reportage style images.
I treat photography as a process of record-keeping. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, the records are beautiful. I’m not romantic about my tools (although I do find romance in them!). I’m delighted to discard something if I find a better solution. I have little brand loyalty. I like to contradict myself over time as industries evolve.
