Today Canon revealed the latest model in its series of compact PowerShot cameras, the GX 1 mark III. It is the first model in the point-and-shoot series to incorporate an APS-C sized sensor and Dual Pixel phase-detect autofocus.
The chip, which is the same as the one found inside the Canon 80D, is a 24.3MP type with an ISO range of 100 – 25600. Because the camera uses Dual Pixel AF, whose phase detection pixels are embedded directly into the sensor and cover approximately 80% of the surface area, the GX 1 should have the fastest AF performance of any Canon point-and-shoot to date.
On the front of the camera is a fixed 24-72mm zoom (35mm equivalent) with a f/2.8-5.6 aperture range and optical stabilisation that works down to 4 stops.
It has a built-in 2.36 million dot EVF at the centre and a vari-angle touch sensitive LCD screen with a Touch & Drag AF feature that lets you move the AF point with your finger while composing with the finder.
Other important specifications include continuous shooting speeds of 7fps (or 9fps with fixed AF), a pop-up flash, Full HD video up to 60fps, image stabilisation for movies that combines OIS with electronic stabilisation, a Panorama mode, and dust and moisture resistance.
