Nasim Mansurov of Photography Life recently published an interesting article that provides an updated look at the ongoing mirrorless versus DSLR debate.
He was inspired to write the post after reading about how Fujifilm and Nikon took a stab at each other during their respective press events in early 2016. Specifically, Fujifilm humorously suggested that using a mirrorless camera instead of a bulky DSLR would make room for two extra cans of beer in your bag, while Nikon, with a more serious tone, hammered home the advantages of the faster and more reliable AF system of DSLRs.
In his article, Nasim takes a far more balanced approach than either brand, touching upon a variety of salient topics including: weight/size, the quality of DSLR APS-C lenses, the problem of buying into a new system, lens choice, the improving AF of mirrorless systems, and battery life challenges.
He concludes his article in a manner I wouldn’t have necessarily expected from a 10-year owner and user of Nikon DSLRs:
No matter how we look at it, I believe that the clock for DSLRs has already been ticking. Unless Nikon and Canon get into the mirrorless game now, they will lose out heavily later.
