For a photographer who is used to interchangeable lens cameras and switching between different focal lengths, it takes a lot of guts to travel to a new country with a fixed lens camera. This is exactly what photographer Elizabeth Gray did when she visited France for the first time in June 2016. Instead of packing her two DSLRs and a range of lenses, she decided to challenge herself to use just the Fujifilm X100T. Although she admits to bringing her new Nikon D500 “just in case,” it spent the entire trip either inside the safe at the hotel or at the bottom of her backpack.
I was surprised to learn that, up until that point, Elizabeth had experimented very little with street photography. Despite this, she managed to capture a couple of lovely environmental portraits of people with their canine companions. I also love her images of the French Provencal countryside, and how she manages to make even seemingly ordinary details, such as a door or knives and forks in a drawer, appear interesting.
