Johann van der Walt photographs ballet with the Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2

If you’ve ever wondered whether Fujifilm gear can handle low-light dance, Johann van der Walt has shared a good example of the system’s capabilities.

Back in April, he had the chance to photograph a ballet performance called ‘Giselle’ at the Johburg Theatre. Johann calls this theatre “the most photographer friendly in South Africa” because photographers are often invited to the dress rehearsal and to photograph the performances.

Originally, he had planned to use the XF 90mm f/2 but since it wasn’t available to hire, he turned to his trusty XF 56mm f/1.2 which turned out to be a good choice because he could maintain a higher shutter speed while keeping his ISO down, and capture more of the scene.

You can see Johann’s full gallery of ballet shots and find out which settings he used here. Having shot a similar performance myself a couple of years ago, I have to say I am very impressed with the results!
