Photographer and cinematographer Max Yuryev recently took it upon himself to compare the new Samyang / Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AF lens and the Sony Planar 50mm f/1.4 on the Sony A7r II and a6300. The former is one of Samyang’s first autofocus lenses along with the 14mm f/2.8, while the latter is Sony’s first 50mm f/1.4 lens for the E-mount system.
During his testing period, he looked at numerous aspects including build, physical controls, single point and continuous autofocus with and without face detection, manual focus, centre and corner sharpness, flare, purple fringing, tones, contrast, and video performance.
To find out which he recommends, you can watch the full video below. (And if you’re short on time, you can skip to the conclusion at minute 11:16.) You can also subscribe to his excellent review channel here.
