The latest model in Fujifilm’s range of X series cameras is the entry-level X-A5. Sporting a retro and stylish design just like its predecessor, it offers a wide range of features including a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, a newly developed image processor that offers processing speeds 1.5 faster than the X-A3, a 180-degree tilting screen with touch sensitivity and Bluetooth technology in addition to WiFi for quick and easy image transfer.
The X-A5 is the very first X-A model to feature on-sensor phase detection pixels, making the camera twice as fast as previous models and more capable of photographing fast action. Personally we are very happy about this decision as in our experience, X-A cameras with a contrast detection AF system tend to struggle with fast-moving subjects.
Its native ISO sensitivity range has also been raised from ISO 6400 to ISO 12800 with extended values of 100, 25600 and 51200. In the real world, you won’t notice a huge difference but it is comforting to know that the quality at the higher values in particular (3200 – 12800) should be a little better.
Also new to the X-A5 is 4K video – albeit with a frame rate of just 15fps and a maximum recording time of 5 minutes – and a high-speed HD video function that allows you to record slow motion footage. As for Full HD, its maximum frame rate and recording time are is still 60fps and 14 minutes respectively. The new 4K Burst mode allows you to extract single frames from 4K footage while the Multi Focus Mode synthesises multiple 4K quality images to increase the depth of field of your image.
Turning to the body, you’ll notice that the X-A5 is the spitting image of its predecessor. The body shape and size is almost identical, as is the button and dial layout. Exceptions include the disappearance of the focus selector on the front and the appearance of a brand new 2.5mm mic/remote jack on the side. The C (Custom) setting on the mode dial has also been replaced by the Panorama mode.
To please the selfie-taking crowd, Fujifilm opted to keep the tilting touch-sensitive screen. When the panel is rotated up 180 degrees, the rear command dial automatically switches to the zoom and shutter release function and Eye AF automatically activates to help you take sharp self portraits.
Despite the fact that it uses the same NP-W126S battery as the X-A3, users can now shoot as many as 450 photos per single battery charge, which is 40 shots more than its predecessor.
It comes bundled with the new collapsible Fujinon XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ, the first power zoom for the system.

The Fujifilm X-A5 is expected to hit stores in February 2018 for approximately $599 with the 15-45mm kit lens. It is available in three colour variations: black, brown or pink faux-leather wrapped around a silver body.
