Leica has announced the latest prime lens for its M series of cameras: the Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6.
Successor to the original screw mount lens produced from 1955 to 1963, the new 28mm retains the analog look and mechanical construction of its predecessor. The optical design is also very similar, including 6 elements in 4 groups arranged symmetrically around the iris.
At just 18mm in length, 51mm in diameter and 165g in weight, it is one of the most compact wide-angle lenses in the M portfolio and an ideal choice for street and documentary work.
It also has a signature look reminiscent of its predecessor. As Leica states in the official press release:
…the new Leica Summaron-M 28 mm f/5.6 renders subjects with rich contrast across almost the entire image field. The combination of extreme depth of field, natural contrast rendition, excellent resolution of details and visible vignetting create a unique visual signature and lend pictures a special look reminiscent of earlier days of analogue photography.
The Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 has a suggested retail price of £1,900 including VAT. Customers wishing to purchase 28mm f/1.5 must pre-order. Deliveries will follow according to the sequence in which orders are received. If there is a high demand, customers should expect long delivery times during the first few months.
