Environmental Portraits in Thailand: Jakub Puchalski’s first outing with the Fujifilm X100T

Photographer Jakub Puchalski recently decided that he wanted to move away from the standard portrait genre and begin experimenting with environmental portraits. To realise his goal, he purchased a Fujifilm X100T, whose 35mm equivalent lens is the perfect length to capture people in their natural surroundings.

When asked if he worries about not having a beautiful out-of-focus background due to the maximum f/2 aperture, he states that it doesn’t concern him because the environment is just as important as the person being photographed.

In his first gallery with the X100T, he shares five beautiful environmental portraits taken at the Kha Floating Market in Thailand. I really hope he expands upon this series, as he has a raw talent for capturing expressions.

Jabuk’s project resounds with us because Mathieu realised a similar project at the Machynlleth market a couple of years ago. Using only the X100s, he took portraits of the vendors at their respective stands. It was a great exercise in confidence and creating interesting images with only one standard focal length.
