Gary Fong recently released a helpful video where he demonstrates how the Sony a6300’s autofocus works for sports photography. By taking the camera to the Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna (British Columbia), he was able to track skiers using the a6300’s hybrid autofocus system. He chose skiers because they move at fast speeds, don’t tend to follow a direct path and often pass behind other skiers or obstacles along the way, such as signs.
The settings he recommends for sports photography are as follows:
- Continuous AF
- 1/3200-1/4000s shutter speed with Auto ISO
- Hi+ burst
- Wide focus area
- Centre Lock-On AF (object tracking)
