Beer and a Shot by The Camera Project

The Camera Project is an excellent YouTube channel that was created in early 2015. Its primary focus is camera reviews but instead of being solely technical, hosts Jay, Josh and Alison explore a neighbourhood, city or particular location while testing the camera in-depth.

Their video reviews aren’t just a technical analysis but also an exploration of the location surrounding them which makes them more personal and original than the average video reviews you can find on YouTube. The videos are very well done and their thoughts about the cameras are complete and honest. They often point out noteworthy aspects of the location which is a pleasant and welcome extra. So far they had reviewed many popular cameras such as the Sony A7 mark II, Fujifilm X-T10, X100T, Panasonic GX8 and Olympus OM-D E-M5 mark II.

Recently the channel started up a new series called “Beer and a Shot”, a fun photo competition between two photographers. The challenge consists of drinking a beer, then trying to bring back the best photo possible in one hour by following a specific theme. For the first challenge, the topic was “disappearing” and hosts Josh and Alison wandered around the streets of New York trying to take the best image that could represent that theme. They both used the OM-D E-M5 mark II and on many occasions, they took advantage of the 5-axis stabilization for slow shutter speeds. While the purpose of the video is mainly entertainment, they also offer a few hints and thoughts about the cameras they are using, which makes the videos an interesting gear commentary as well. Once time runs out, the photos are submitted for judging and a winner is selected. Viewers can also leave a comment and select their favorite shot (they are all listed in the video’s description).

This series definitely puts an original twist on camera reviewing and if successful, it will probably be developed with more episodes. You can check out the video below. Make sure to subscribe to the channel to follow their camera reviews.
